Science Fiction Final

"My interest is in the future because I am going to spend the rest of my life there" Charles F. Kettering. Science fiction is suspenseful and always makes the audience think the story could go both ways. Also science fiction makes people think about the possible things that could happen in the future.

Something that makes good science fiction is good characterization. The characters thoughts, actions and expressions have a big impact on the story. When the character makes the audience feel like them it can seem as though the audience is apart of the science fiction. I also makes the fiction seem realistic. For example in Ray Bradbury’s short story, Darked They Were With Golden Eyes the main character, his family and a few others go to Mars to live while there is a war on Earth. While they are on Mars their ways become alien like and they too become aliens. The main character really makes the audience feel like their turning into an alien.

Another key item involved in good science fiction is the setting, when the background and the ambiance of the movie create the mood. This is something else that makes the movie seem believable. A movie with good setting and ambiance is George Lucas’ Star Wars. Star Wars is about another galaxy made up of the Galactic Republic and the "force". The "force" has a dark side and tries to take over the republic. Star Wars portrays a lot of dark scenes especially when they show the enemies and things like the flying cars. They make you think about what could be in the future because of how realistic the setting looks.

The last main idea of a science fiction is the possible technology. The technology has to be something that could be possibly built and used in the future but still have a fictional background. In Doug Liman’s movie Jumper A young man that has grown up by himself with his parents leaving him when he was five. He lives a luxurious life considering he can "jump" to anywhere he wants, but a Paladin discovers him and tries to disable him. They use a special taser that sends volts to the brain so they can't jump. This is something that could be real in the future but is fictional right now.

In conclusion, good science fiction is when the story is believable because it has good characterization like "Darked They Were With Golden Eyes",it creates the mood like "Star Wars" and its based on possible technology like "Jumper". Science fiction makes people think about the future and how things could really turn out.
