Journal #4
My impact activity is a portfolio of a culmination of pictures I took with the fisheye lens. To make this portfolio I had to edit my pictures, transfer them to a memory card, print them and put them together in a binder.
This portfolio is a result of trial and error, research and learning from a teacher. After testing out the lens the first time i saved the pictures and sorted through them and chose which ones I wanted to edit and keep. Then after I got help from my teacher I had another bunch of pictures to sort through and edit.
This shows that I learned how to compose my images with with a fisheye lens. For example I learned how to be cautious of the line movement on the edges and in the middle in the background. I also had to decide if the subject was going to be curved on the sides or normal in the middle. Something else I learned about the lens is the camera range had to be a lot closer since it was a wide angle lens. Learning about the fisheye lens and experimenting with the lens, helped me gain a better understanding of a fisheye lens and also a new perspective on photography.

My passion is photography. In the future I want to make a living out of photography whether it be my career of a part time job I want to always be a photographer. I wanted to do a fisheye lens portfolio as my project because I look at it as more experience for the future. The more different types of photography and experience I have, the more opportunities I will get. From this project I have learned how to look at things from a new perspective and this project has given me a new outlook on subjects I can photograph and different editing techniques I can use with the fisheye lens.

A Fisheye lens is a wide-angle lens that distorts your picture by bending the photo in a circular shape, bulging the middle and curving that edges. I chose to learn how to use this lens for my project because it’s a different its like learning how to use a whole different camera. There are a lot of complications and this to consider when using this lens that are often overlooked. The process I will go through to learn how to use this lens is to first research about the lens and professional fisheye portfolios, I will test it out, then talk to Mrs. Cher Takemoto about how to use the lens correctly, then I will take another round of pictures with my new knowledge of the lens.
After doing research I discovered that there are different types of fisheye lenses, a diagonal fisheye and a circular fisheye but the type I will be working with is a diagonal fisheye lens. Composing fisheye photos is more complex because you have to be aware of the edges. The fisheye lens distorts any line that’s not in the middle therefore you have to position a horizon line in the exact middle for it to be straight. When you zoom out you increase the distortion, when its fully extended the lens creates a round image and draws the sides inward compressing the outside elements of the picture.
Then I tested out the lens on my own and learned more things about the fisheye from experience. Like the range of your subject and the camera has to be closer then a regular lens. While taking pictures I had to adjust my camera range constantly because everything appeared zoomed out. Also I had to change the angles of my subjects to make the background on the edges distorted and the subject normal. This was a struggle because I am use to using the rule of thirds but with the fisheye lens I have to compose my subjects in the middle.
When I talked to Mrs. Takemoto, she taught me also about the lines that distort on the edges. She told me that to distinct a fisheye picture, you have to use line movement away from the middle so you can see the bowed lines. For example fence lines, tables, horizon lines, etc.
Throughout this process I learned a lot of valuable tips to use while
shooting with a fisheye lens. I learned to position lines on the edges to distort them and in the middle to make them straight, I also learned about the camera range and how it affects your picture. Overall I learned a lot about the fisheye lens and have a better understanding of how to use it.

Reflection Questions: Holocaust Video, Chapter 2-3
1. They visit the gas chambers and Elie Wiesel describes what everything is and how they killed so many people at once. They also visited the infirmary where doctors did experiments on patients and the brick wall where people were executed everyday. Also they visited the museums where they show peoples belongings from that time like the suitcases and shoes.
2. Its called a death factory because it was producing dead Jews. Most of the people worked to death or were killed in the gas chambers. It was industrialized because they killed so many people everyday like a machine and they had a process to it and made it a regular and constant thing.
3. The labelled suitcase symbolize all the Jews came with, their lives were in their suitcases and it was taken from them. The baby clothes shows that they had no mercy and killed even babies and children. The numerous shoes show how many people were owned by each pair and how many of the shoes owners are just dead.
4. This movie was shot in winter to give a somber feeling to the movie, the interviews were slow and there were many pauses, which you don't see in a lot of movies. It was effective because it gave time for all the words to sink in and give you a real idea of what the Holocaust was like.
5. The book and the movie didn't have as much of an impact on me as I would have thought because I have watched many accounts of the Holocaust and had a good understanding of the genocide but I've never seen an actual surviver give a tour of the camps. Everything culminated just makes me think and try to imagine how anyone could torture a person with no remorse and continue taking hundreds of lives everyday. Although the book paints a vivid picture in your head of what the Holocaust was like, the movie shows the physical places where the events happened. Even so, I think the book had more of an impact on me because it wasn't like a documentary where you interview people and get b-roll of the places but it shares an actual specific account of everything Elie Wiesel experienced during the Holocaust.

1. The living conditions like the places they slept in and worked in. Something that became clearer where the beds because there weren't mattress' or anything it was just an area to sleep in. When they've been beaten and working so hard all day the one thing that might give them hope is sleep and they couldn't even do that in a decent bed, especially because there were lots of men to a single bed.
2. Some camera angles that were often used were ariel shots and wide angled shots to show the immense size of the camps. Also I think the pictures taken during the Holocaust mixed in with the modern footage was used to make it seem more realistic that certain events happened in the places they were shooting.
3. The madness Oprah and Elie Wiesel are referring is the fact that in that kind of environment you start to develop a feeling that its normal for people to die everyday right infront of you, it became more normal to die then to live.

I love photography. I am taking photography currently but want more experience for a possible future in a photography career. I could find a professional photographer to learn from and assist. I could also practice a type of photography I am weak in or want experience in, ex: macro, silhouettes, portraits, fisheye.
